The Behavioral Health Program (BHP) is comprised of licensed clinical psychologists who specialize in working with firefighters and the unique psychological demands associated with service in the Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD). The program is designed to support members in navigating the complex occupational stressors that arise in the course of fire service work. These stressors may include exposure to traumatic incidents, cumulative operational stress, burnout, challenges related to work identity, the impact of repeated critical incidents, and the broader cultural and organizational dynamics that can affect morale, wellbeing, and functioning over the course of a firefighter’s career.
Fire service professionals operate in environments where trauma exposure is an inherent occupational hazard. Over time, the accumulation of high-intensity calls, operational demands, shift work, and the cultural expectations of the profession can place significant strain on psychological health, relationships, and overall wellbeing. The Behavioral Health Program exists to provide specialized clinical support from psychologists who understand the fire service environment and the realities of working within the LAFD.
While many members seek services for concerns related to the job, support through the BHP is not limited to work-related issues. Firefighters are welcome to access services for concerns arising in their personal lives as well. This may include challenges related to marital or relationship concerns, parenting, caregiving responsibilities, elder care, family stress, substance use, or other life circumstances that may be affecting overall wellbeing. The program recognizes that personal and professional wellbeing are closely connected, and support is available for concerns occurring both on and off the job.
Services through the Behavioral Health Program are offered on a time-limited basis and are available free of charge to active-duty firefighters. As a starting point, firefighters are invited to schedule a 30-minute confidential telephone consultation with a licensed psychologist. The purpose of this consultation is to discuss current concerns, provide general guidance on strategies for managing or addressing those concerns, and help determine the most appropriate next steps.
If an individualized treatment plan would be beneficial, firefighters may be offered formal therapeutic services through the BHP or may be referred to an outside provider, depending on the nature of the concern, needs of the member and availability of the Fire Psychologists.
All services provided through the Behavioral Health Program are confidential and free of charge. Information shared with program psychologists is not reported to or shared with the Department, except in rare circumstances required by law. The program is designed to ensure firefighters can access professional support in a private and protected manner while continuing to serve their communities.
